It happened at the gym I go to, in the cafe area.
“What’s that you’re working on, young man?”
I looked up from my laptop. I clocked the green lanyard with sunflowers around her neck.
“Just some work stuff.”
She was quiet for a moment. “Like school work?”
“Erhh no, work work stuff.”
I smiled briefly and turned back to my screen. I actually had legit client work I wanted to focus on. It’s not easy when it bores you to sh*t.
“I’ve just done a swimming challenge and I’m thinking about my next one. What do you think?”
I looked up and she was a few feet away.
Bloody hell.
“Yeah errrhhh, have you tried Knaresborough pool? That’s nice.”
She paused again. I definitely misheard her.
“I posted on Facebook about it and guess what someone suggested?”
Not more of this. “Don’t know.”
She leaned in and chuckled. “Mordoor pool.”
“Oh right, haha.”
“It’s not real though.”
“No?”
“Mordoor’s from Lord of the Rings.”
“Oh right, I’ve never seen it.”
She looked at me like I’d just shot Satan. She scuttled back to her table, staring at me and smiling.
Was she hitting on me or just being nice? Who knows. It’s only happened to me a few times in my whole life where women have actively started a conversation with me.
It’s always flattering when it does.
So even though I was a grumpy f*ck on this occassion, I always try to be civil. It takes balls approaching a random stranger.
Respect to anyone who tries it.
And if you’re a woman who’s thinking about approaching that cute young man?
Go for it.
We love that sh*t. (Most of the time.)
