Loving No Matter What

My girlfriend was recently diagnosed with a condition.

I won’t say what it is — that’s for her to share but it’s not life-threatening.

Still, we’ve had conversions about what it means for our future, and if anything, it’s just reaffirmed what I already knew.

I bloody love this woman.

Does this mean I’ll stay with her no matter what?

I’d like to think so, yes.

Because that whole spiel in weddings about loving through sickness and health? It’s not just a cute saying. I remind myself daily that people actually have to do this.

One of my mum’s clients has dementia. Said client is 53. Her husband has had to live with her condition for the last 3 years with no end in sight. Nor would he want to. But you get what I mean.

Exhausting doesn’t begin to cover life as a full-time carer.

Then my mum had to do the same when her partner got sick. Lung cancer. Brain tumours. It was a lethal and brutal concoction. The poor bugger didn’t stand a chance.

Through sickness and health…

So I remind myself that this could happen to me. I may have to love someone no matter what, which means I better choose wisely.

I believe I have.

What about you?
