Striving & Settling

Me and my friend Agnes have an ongoing joke.

Over the years, we’ve strived to “escape” the rat race. No more bosses. Choose our schedules. Make sh*tloads of money.

Etc, etc.

But in our 30s, a funny thing has happened. We’ve both “settled”. We both have regular jobs. We both want committed relationships. Travel has lot its alure.

In essence, the life that 80% of people in developed countries live?

Yeah; it’s appealing to us.

All of it has led me to believe something which – in hindsight – is probably kinda obvious:

There’s a reason the 9-5 exists.

And by extension, there’s a reason we have systems.

Our wants and desires change. This is something I’m just coming to terms with. Things that once excited me no longer do. Things that were once priorities no longer are.

So although we long to believe we’re all unique, special snowflakes, maybe we’re not.

Maybe we’re all just wandering hunks of meat hurtling through space with absolutely no idea what we want.

Maybe we’re all just following the herd.

Kinda freeing, isn’t it?
